Why the agri-retailer is the real critical link
The best advice in the world is worthless if the product is not on the shelf next door. Six months of observation across four points of sale.
By Nabatic team
During FITO’s first months we followed what happened to diagnoses once they were sent. One figure stopped us: close to a third of the farmers we advised did not apply the recommended treatment within five days.
It was not a trust problem. It was a shelf problem.
Advice stops at the counter
A farmer receives a diagnosis at 8 a.m. He drives forty kilometres. The shop does not stock the recommended active ingredient, or stocks it in a twenty-five litre container for a plot that needs two.
Three outcomes, all bad: he leaves with something else — the shelf’s product, not the diagnosis’s; he waits for the next delivery, and the outbreak gains two days; or he does not treat at all.
What the shop cannot anticipate
A retailer buys at the start of the campaign, on last year’s history and his own instinct. He has no signal at all about what is happening this week in plots thirty kilometres away.
The result is two symmetrical, expensive errors. On one side, capital tied up in items that will not turn over, with expiry dates closing in. On the other, stockouts at exactly the peak, when demand is worth the most.
Across the four shops we observed, expired unsold stock represented between 6 and 11 % of the value of crop-protection inventory. For some, that is a whole year’s margin.
The signal already exists
Every FITO diagnosis says three things: which pest, on which crop, in which municipality. Aggregated across a province, that draws a map of pest pressure one to two weeks ahead of farmers’ purchases.
That is the signal Croplix turns into a purchase forecast. Not an abstract prediction: “late blight pressure is rising on tomato in your catchment area, your fungicide stock covers eleven days of sales at the current rate.”
The farmer finds it, the shop sells it
The point of sale is not an intermediary to route around. It is the last metre of agronomic advice, and the only place where a recommendation becomes an actual field operation.
A diagnosis with no product available is a frustration. A product available with no diagnosis is a guess. The two together are a season that holds.
